This post is also available in: Español

There is a range of scholarships available to international students seeking to study in Australia. Eligibility for these scholarships varies, with criteria ranging from country of origin to intended area of study. This guide aims to provide a comprehensive list of scholarships available to international students who are looking to study in Australia. It looks at Australian government scholarships, available anywhere in the country, as well as scholarships that are available in each state.

For easy navigation, scholarships for each state have been grouped according to the following categories:

Level of qualification

Study area

Origin

Each of these categories is defined as follows.

Level of Qualification

Level of qualification is a common criterion for scholarships. In Australia, the level of qualification for a scholarship typically refers to one of the following:

Level of qualification

Type of qualification

Description

Undergraduate

Bachelor

A Bachelor degree is the lowest level of qualification available at university and usually requires 3 to 4 years of study. Graduates of a Bachelor degree will have a broad knowledge of their professional area and the skills required to enter their chosen field or complete further study.

Postgraduate

Bachelor honours

A Bachelor Honours is usually an additional year added to a Bachelor degree. It is likely to delve deeper into the content studied during the Bachelor degree. Depending on the structure, it may contain content subjects or a thesis component.

Graduate Diploma/Graduate Certificate

Graduate Diplomas or Certificates typically follow an undergraduate degree and can be in the same field of study or a different area completely. For instance, a student can complete the Bachelor degree in one field and than seek to obtain a qualification in a different field. A Graduate Diploma or Certificate allows them to do this without completing another entire Bachelor degree. It can also be used to complete further study in one’s field, usually on a particular topic of focus that allows deeper learning.

Masters

A Masters degree can only be completed after a Bachelor qualification and provides the student with knowledge and skills within a specialised area of their chosen field. In Australia, a Masters qualification can range from 1 to 4 years depending on the institution and field of study.

PhD

PhDs are the highest level of study in Australia and will provide graduates with a comprehensive understanding of a specific aspect of their field of study. The specialized area is usually complex and the student will have advanced research skills as well as a systematic understanding of the topic. A PhD typically lasts for between 3 and 4 years.

Study area

Another common criteria item for scholarships in Australia is study area. Many funding opportunities are specific to a particular field, meaning you are only eligible if you are studying a degree in that area. The main fields of study in Australia are:

There aren’t necessarily scholarships available in every single field of study, although many of the scholarships available to international students have been designed with the purpose of funding students in one of these key areas.

Government scholarships

There are three types of Australian scholarships available to international students:

  • Australia Awards
  • Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships
  • International Post Graduate Research Scholarships

Australian Awards

The Australian Awards are designed to assist students from developing countries, with specific countries from the Pacific region, Africa, the Middle East and Asia selected for participation in the program. Scholarships are awarded for study in particular areas based on the need for that field of study in the student’s country of origin. The study areas are chosen according to the development priorities of the student’s home country.

Numerous universities and other institutions across Australia participate in the program, creating a broad range of opportunities for students from developing countries. Scholarships are available for Bachelor, Masters and PhD level qualifications.  Each scholarship typically includes full tuition, accommodation, health cover, return airfares and some money for living costs.

Endeavour Postgraduate Scholarship Awards

The Endeavour scholarship offers complete funding for international students to complete postgraduate study in Australia, at either the Masters or PhD level. Only students from certain countries are eligible to apply so it is worth checking the list of participating countries. Applications are to be submitted through the Endeavour website, with a hard copy submission option available on request.

This scholarship provides comprehensive funding to the individual, with tuition fees, health and travel insurance, a travel allowance, a general monthly allowance and accommodation all included. The tuition fees for selected students will cover a Masters qualification (to the value of $140,500AUD) or a PhD qualification (to the value of $272,500).

International Post Graduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)

The IPRS is a scholarship available to international students who have already been admitted into an Australian university course for either a research Masters or PhD. Criteria and application process does vary slightly according to the university that you are enrolled with, so it is best to contact your institution directly for further information about selection.

IPRS scholarships offer both block grant funding or flexible funding structures. The funding typically includes cost of tuition as well as living costs, and may include additional allowances depending on the specific situation.
